Fathers have a very important role in this life-stage and experience
their own feelings and sometimes, anxiety about pregnancy, birth
and parenting. We believe that it is important that dads feel empowered
to support their partners effectively and at the same time have
the freedom to embrace their own experiences. We recommend attending
our Womb
Mates workshop to interact with other experienced dads.
In addition, we recommend Pregnant
Man : How Nature Makes Fathers Out of Men
by Gordon Churchwell. The book is a hilarious and touching story
of Gordon's nine-month evolution from clothes husband to birth partner
and coparent. Along the way, this regular guy stumbles across some
amazing discoveries that are important to both sexes. Starting with
his own morning sicknesses, Gordon finds out the researchers have
long documented that many men have pregnancy symptoms, Couvade Syndrome.
Couvade, from the French couver meaning: to hatch is known to
affect somewhere between 10% to 65% of expectant fathers (depending
on the study you read), and while the symptoms can occur at anytime,
most appear in the third month and again at delivery. The symptoms
mimic all of the normal symptoms of pregnancy ~ mood swings, fatigue,
dizziness, leg cramps, nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, and cravings
- taken from canadianparents.com
Originally, the term described the rare practice by males in isolated
primitive communities of simulating the maternal condition but Gordon
find's out that some of the latest scientific findings also reveal
a male hormonal response that helps them empathize with their partners
and prepare for fatherhood.
